About Microsoft Office
Microsoft Office for Windows has been released in many editions, and this page brings together the ones you can still download: Microsoft 365 and the year-numbered Office 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010 and 2007. Pick an edition in the version list on this page to see its download options, and read on to find out which one suits your PC and what changed when Microsoft stopped supporting the older releases.
One suite, two ways of shipping it
Office is Microsoft's office suite: Word for documents, Excel for spreadsheets, PowerPoint for slides and Outlook for mail are the parts almost everyone has touched. For a long time Microsoft sold it as standalone editions named after a year. You bought one, installed it and kept using it for as long as the computer lasted, receiving fixes only while that edition was supported. Microsoft 365 replaced this model with a single line that keeps changing, and Microsoft lists it as the successor to every older edition collected here. The difference matters more than the version number suggests: a year-numbered edition stays essentially frozen in the state it shipped in, while Microsoft 365 keeps getting new features and security fixes. Documents saved in the modern formats usually open across these editions, although features added later may look different or be missing in an older copy.
Every edition at a glance
| Edition | Released | Support |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 | continuously updated | supported |
| Office 2019 | 2018 | ended October 14, 2025 |
| Office 2016 | 2015 | ended October 14, 2025 |
| Office 2013 (SP1) | 2013 | ended April 11, 2023 |
| Office 2010 | 2010 | ended October 13, 2020 |
| Office 2007 | 2007 | ended October 10, 2017 |
Office 2013 is offered with Service Pack 1 already included, so you do not have to add it separately. The Office 2007 download is an archived installer, because Microsoft no longer distributes that edition itself.
Which version should you choose?
- A PC you use every day, especially online: Microsoft 365. It is the only line on this page that still gets security updates.
- You already own a licence for Office 2019 or 2016: both still install and run, but since October 2025 they receive no fixes of any kind.
- An old, slow machine: Office 2010 or 2007 may be what it handles comfortably. Keep such a computer for occasional documents rather than for mail and web files.
- Testing and archive work: older editions help when you need to check how a document looks in the software a client or an office still uses.
Security after the end of support
When support ends, Microsoft stops releasing security updates, bug fixes and technical help for that edition. The program does not switch off, but any vulnerability found afterwards stays open for good. For an office suite that is a real risk, because documents arrive from outside: attachments, downloads, shared folders. If you stay on an unsupported edition, do not open files from unknown senders, leave macros disabled, and keep Windows and your antivirus up to date. It is safer still to use an old Office on a machine that is not used for email at all.
Licence and price: is Office free?
The Microsoft 365 app itself installs free of charge, but the full desktop apps come with a Microsoft 365 plan; current plans and prices are on microsoft.com. The older editions here are trial versions. The installer does not include a licence, so you need your own product key to activate them, and without one the programs will not stay usable.
How to install an older edition
- Remove any other Office version first: two editions on one PC tend to conflict.
- Choose the edition in the version list and download its installer.
- Run setup, pick the components you need and enter your product key when asked.
- Open Word once to finish activation, then check that the program shows it as activated.
Pros and cons of an older Office
- Pro: a one-time licence you may already own, with no subscription.
- Pro: works offline, without signing in to an account.
- Pro: a familiar interface for people who dislike change.
- Con: no security updates once support has ended.
- Con: no new features, and newer documents may display differently.
- Con: you still need a valid product key.
Alternatives to Office
If you only need to write documents and fill in spreadsheets, LibreOffice and WPS Office are office suites for Windows that open Word and Excel files. For spreadsheets shared with other people, Google Sheets works in the browser.
